Video: METALLICA Guitarist Discusses Inspiration For VANS Shoe He Designed
February 12, 2013In the five-minute clip below, METALLICA guitarist Kirk Hammett and pro surfer Nathan Fletcher catch a few waves, jam on the guitar and even discuss the first time Nathan saw METALLICA at a concert at the LA Coliseum in 1988. Kirk also talks about his inspiration for the black Vans Slip-On shoe he designed.
For his Vans shoe (see photo below),Hammett incorporated his love of surfing and nature by choosing an all-natural upper made of hemp for a collapsible Slip-On. The inside heel is accentuated with a guitar pick inspired by his Ouija guitar and designed by one of METALLICA's favorite artists, Dirty Donny.
The shoe is available at the Metallica x Vans microsite.
In March, METALLICA will introduce the "Kill 'Em All"-themed shoes featuring the classic Slip-On and Sk8-Hi styles, each emblazoned with artwork commemorating the album's 30th anniversary.
